On 18th September the Discovery Centre of Energy in cooperation with Tallinn City opened Tallinn’s first drone education classroom, expanding opportunities for drone education in the city and enabling general education schools, children, and young people to gain practical knowledge in the rapidly evolving field of drone technology.

According to Tallinn Deputy Mayor Kristjan Järvan, drone technology is a fast-growing field that offers young people the opportunity to acquire skills that will be essential in the future labour market.

“Tallinn aims to be a city where technology, education, and innovation go hand in hand. The drone education classroom gives young people the opportunity to learn engineering, programming, electronics, and aviation through practical activities, while also discovering new career opportunities in the rapidly developing technology sector,” said Järvan.

Since 8 September, the Discovery Centre of Energy has been offering drone clubs for children and young people aged 8-11 and 12-16. From October onwards, Tallinn’s general education schools will be able to book drone education programmes. Children and young people can also get their first hands-on experience with drones through the Discovery Centre of Energy’s city camps from the age of eight.

As part of the Test in Tallinn project, public sessions at Tallinn’s drone football arena, established at the Discovery Centre of Energy, are open daily to both children and adults at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, and 18:00.

Drone education programmes for children and young people have been developed at the Discovery Centre of Energy since March 2026 through a collaboration between the Tallinn Centre of Technology and Science Foundation, the City of Tallinn, and the HobiZone Club within the framework of the Test in Tallinn project. The completion of the drone education classroom was funded by the City of Tallinn.

According to Darja Saar, CEO of the Discovery Centre of Energy, drone technology is one of the fields that particularly captivates young people and helps spark their interest in engineering.

“A first experience of flying an FPV drone or playing drone football makes young people’s eyes light up and creates a genuine interest in technology and engineering. From there, they move on to developing more advanced skills such as 3D modelling and printing, programming, and in-depth studies of physics and mathematics,” said Saar.

The Estonian Science Interest Education Association has commissioned the Discovery Centre of Energy to organise a nationwide dronotics festival. The festival will culminate in a national drone football championship, which will take place during the Great Space Day event in Tallinn on 23-24 April 2027.

The Tallinn Centre of Technology and Science Foundation was established in 1999 by the City of Tallinn, Enefit, Utilitas, and TalTech with the aim of promoting technology and science education among young people. Together with the Discovery Centre of Energy, its hobby school, and the EnerHUB engineering incubator, the foundation serves as one of Estonia’s key hubs for engineering education.
